Welcome to "Surviving The Attack" - A
Training Seminar To Help Police Officers and Emergency Personnel Survive
A Deadly Force Encounter!

Hello! My name is Thomas Schlieman. I have
served as a Police Officer since January, 1989 for the City of
St. Cloud, Minnesota. Through my experiences as a patrol
officer, field tactics trainer, and critical incident survivor, I have
developed a seminar to help Police, Corrections, Military, Dispatchers and
Security Officers to "survive" the potential deadly force "attack."
Information on the city of St. Cloud and the St. Cloud
Police Department:
St. Cloud is located in the center of Minnesota approximately one hour northwest of downtown Minneapolis. The
population of St. Cloud is approximately 70,000 people, with an
additional 17,000 students at St. Cloud State University. The city
is home to one of the largest V.A. Medical Centers in the nation, which
holds around 2500 in/out patients at any given day dealing with mental
health and chemical dependency. There are four suburban cities
that border St. Cloud, each having an average population of 10,000
residents. On any given day, there is a visitor and work
population of 250,000 people who are in the city.
The St. Cloud
Police Department answers approximately 70,000 calls for service, and
staffs over 100 full time Police Officers. The department also has
specialty units including Investigations, Gang strike force, CCTI, Drug
task force, School rescores officers and Swat.
Importance of Officer Survival !
- In 1993 I was involved in a "run and gun" gunfight with
a wanted parole violator operating a stolen vehicle. Earlier
that day the suspect had burglarized a home and stole a
shotgun. When officers located this suspect, a short
vehicle chase ensued. The suspect crashed the car and
fled on foot. During a two hour search in a larger
wooded area the suspect exchanged gunfire with two fellow officers and myself.
The suspect fled again on foot and a another search
was set up to find the suspect which led to gunfight. The final gun battle took place at a distance of
approximately four feet. The weapon used by the perpetrator was
a 12 gauge shotgun with slugs.
- On May 11 of 1999 I was involved in a shooting with a
mentally disturbed man who had sacrificed his golden
retriever dog by cutting its throat with a Buck knife.
Neighbors saw the man covered in blood, carrying a Bible
and saying that God told him to sacrifice his dog.
When I found the man he had stabbed himself with a large
Buck knife that
was stuck squarely in his chest. He pulled the knife
out of his chest and than charged at me in a rage
attempting to stab me. The subject backed me into a
parked car and forced me to fire. The shooting took
approximately 1.5 seconds as the man charged and closed the
distance from 8 feet to 2
feet.

What Officers Need to Know !
No
matter what jurisdiction you are in (small county to large metro
area), the potential for a physical attack or deadly encounter
exists! These unfortunate possibilities can apply to any Police
Officer, EMS personnel, or Criminal Justice Professional.
My full-day seminar offer the support and tools needed by Officers to become both mentally and physically
prepared for a deadly force encounter. The first section
of my seminar is called "The
Readiness Aspects Of Use Of Deadly Force". The next section is
called "Surviving The Attack" with the focus on the actual physical survival of the
deadly encounter. During this section I play the audio of
the 911 calls and radio traffic of my critical incidents and go
over hundreds of power point slides of the actual incidents,
news coverage, Grand Jury and Law suits. Finally, in
the third section called "Surviving The Aftermath" I will
cover how officers can survive the emotional and psychological
aftermath of a deadly force encounter. You will surely be glued to your
seat and I assure you that you will come away from this Seminar with the
confidence and positive attitude to survive a deadly force
attack!
Police
Officers, Corrections Officers, Military Personnel, Security
Officers ,and EMS Officials need to keep an edge on survival and
the dangers that we face!
Let me help you "Survive The Attack"
